As Google tries to expand its influence beyond Internet searches and online advertising and into the world of computer and mobile operating systems, analysts said that Mr. Schmidt’s role on the Apple board was dwindling. He had to recuse himself from any discussions about the iPhone, and could have found himself stepping out during talks about Apple’s own operating system.

Google’s Android mobile operating system also competes with Apple’s popular iPhone in the market for cellphones. And recently, Apple turned down two applications that Google had hoped to add to Apple’s App Store.
